Survival Phrases💬

"Bajo en la esquina, por favor"

I'll get off at the corner, please.

Tell this to the ticket collector (cobrador), not the driver.

"¿Pasa por la Plaza de Armas?"

Does this go past the Plaza de Armas?

Useful question to confirm the route before getting on, as routes can be very long.

💡 Survival Insights
  • S/1.50 - S/3.00 depending on distance (short or long stretch).
  • Theoretically 25-30, in practice up to 50 people (many standing).
  • Extreme care with belongings; avoid taking out your phone near open windows.
  • Combi (Minivan), Micro (Minibus), and Ómnibus (Large bus).

⚠️All prices are strictly referential. Costs can vary drastically by region, tourist season, and your haggling skills.

The cheapest way to travel across Peru. There are two types: the 'combi' (usually a minivan) and the 'micro' (typically a minibus). They speed around the city and are incredibly chaotic, with collectors shouting the routes; if you can handle the chaos, hop on one.

🛡️

Pro Traveler Tip

They have signs on the windshield and a 'cobrador' shouting the route. You can ask them directly if they go to a specific place, for example: '¿Va al centro?'.

Your Phone, Your Digital Lifeline

In Peru's main cities, the right apps make the difference between a smooth experience and falling for a scam. These are the ones that actually work here.

📱

Taxi / Urban Mobility

InDrive lets you propose the price and choose your driver by reputation — making it very popular. Uber and Cabify are the most formal options and the safest bet at the airport.

🚌

Intercity Buses & Flights

RedBus and Busbud let you compare all bus companies and buy your seat digitally without queuing. For domestic flights, LATAM and Sky are the dominant options.

🗺️

Offline Navigation

Download maps before you leave: signal on Andean roads and in remote Amazon areas is virtually non-existent. Maps.me is lighter and works exceptionally well offline.

⚠️
Safety Pro-Tip

Avoid using your phone near open windows of taxis or public transport, especially at traffic lights. Always keep a hand on your bag or backpack.

Myths and Truths

🪙

No exact change, no ride.

No driver or street vendor will accept a S/100 or S/50 bill for a S/3 ride. Withdraw from an ATM and immediately go to a supermarket to break it down into S/10s and coins.
